Y12 Creative Media Project: Character Design
For my final project in Year 12, I selected a brief which required me to design a set of heroes and villains based on my imaginary ancient civilisation. My final deliverables were a set of concept art for each character. In undertaking research for this project, I visited the British Museum in London and the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge to examine their collections of ancient artefacts. Alongside this, I read academic studies to further inform my designs.
Initial Sketches
In my first sketches for my designs, my main idea was that I wanted my ancient characters to be based on different animals, with predator animals as the 'heroes' and prey animals as the 'villains'. However, I couldn't decide whether I wanted my designs to be fully anthropomorphic or have animalistic motifs, and through my idea development stage I ended up settling on the latter.
Character Development
For my chosen characters, I settled on four animals; a tiger, a wolf, a hare, and and an elk. As I went on with designing their outfits and choosing a colour scheme, I kept in mind the artefacts I had seen during my research which influenced a lot of my shape language.
Final Illustrations
When I was confident in my character designs, I properly rendered them with poses in Clip Studio Paint (CSP) as well as adding borders to separate the illustrations better.
