Games Design Project

For this project, I had to create a concept for my own video game. My deliverables were an A4 poster for the game, concept art for the characters, and a landscape screenshot of what my gameplay would look like. I decided to make a fantasy open world RPG in which I tried to subvert typical fantasy tropes.

Initial Sketches

I traditionally sketched out some ideas for settings I would use in the game, as well as what characters I could make and composition for my game screenshot and poster.

Character Development

Next, I did some more digital sketches for all of the characters I wanted to include. Originally I wanted to make character sheets for all of the characters shown, however my deadline was too constrictive and so I only did reference sheets for two, the main hero and the main villain.

Character Reference Sheets

For my character sheets, I did a full turnaround including a colour scheme with facial expressions.

Game Poster & Screenshot

In my poster (as seen in the 'Sketch' section above), the main motif of my villain character was a swan.  So, I used a swan's eye as a framing device, therefore making the composition less disjointed and more coherent, and adding narrative flair.

For my game screenshot (as seen in 'Sketch' section above), I took inspiration for the user interface from existing RPG games that I thought fit the theme, such as 'The Legend Of Zelda'. I also took inspiration for my setting from old Victorian-type streets, as I wanted this area of the game to look more affluent.

Personal Project Extension

After my project ended, I still wanted to expand on the world I had created, so I produced an infographic explaining my ideas for the world-building in its story.
